TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION

What principles should guide your approach for integrating technology into your instruction? When can you expect technology to be effective?

  1. The main principle that should guide technology integration, as we have mentioned, is that technology should be implemented when it connects to the subject matter and provides for a deep understanding of the content being presented. In other words, the technology integration needs to be meaningful. Teachers need to consider whether or not the technology enhances the lesson and makes sense for students. In other words, again, does the technology provide for rich instruction of the subject matter?

This goes right along with the second question: When can you expect technology to be effective? Teachers can expect technology to be effective when they consider how technology will enhance the lesson. If it does not provide more meaningful connections to the content, then it will probably not be effective. When teachers consider technology during lesson planning and how it can be meaningfully integrated, they should expect technology to be effective in learning. If technology is just an afterthought, it will probably be ineffective.

  2. Technology should be integrated so that it enhances the information being presented. It should connect to the information being presented and should be relevant and meaningful. Consideration should be given to age and ability level as well.
Technology will be effective when the above mentioned is accomplished. If students are able to utilize the technology and it is connected to the lesson and provides meaningful content, the technology will be effective. I also think that exposing and using technology with students should be an ongoing practice for it to be truly effective.

  3. The main principles that teachers need to consider is that the technology that they chose must be age appropriate and not too confusing to manipulate. You must make a connection to what types of technology are going to be beneficial to the student. As we've learned the only way that technology can truly be effective is if it is integrated appropriately and meaningfully. Teachers need to make smart choices on what technology can do to benefit each student and the lesson itself. For most students, just making the technology interactive and relatable is a great way to integrate. Anything hands-on that a student can do to enhance their learning is great for both child and teacher.

  5. First, teachers should consider factors that they would with any lesson plan such as age appropriateness, purpose and objectives, what tasks are most effective etc. Additional considerations such as the number of pieces of technology available, what technology is the best for a given lesson and how will the classroom have to change or adapt when technology is integrated to name a few. Above all the integration has to be meaningful and purposeful. It should be something that enhances the information presented not just stuck into a lesson for the sake of using technology. If all of these factors are taken into consideration then integration of technology will be successful.Students love to work with technology and when it is integrated appropriately and has students engaged and motivated then it is effective.

  6. Technology should be integrated in a well planned and thought out lesson. The information and technology being integrated should be integrated so it is easy for students to understand the connection between the information and the technology integration. Teachers need to consider the purpose of the lesson and what objectives are going to be met in the lesson to decide what type of technolgy would be appropriate for the lesson. Teachers also need to consider how they will guide student success and understanding while using the technology. Students will always be more excited to participate in a lesson in which technology is integrated, therefore teachers need to plan lessons carefully when integrating technology.

  7. In integrating technology into the classroom it is important to be guided by the content and subject matter along with the curriculum. The technology that is integrated should be meaningful and understood by the children while still challenging. It is important to introduce new forms of technology while still building upon what they have been previously taught, just as in any other subject their are stepping stones for successfully integrating technology.
This integration is most effective when students feel open to and confident about the technology being used. For example, it would be pointless to show a first grade class a detailed powerpoint about vowels however a less wordy and interactive Smart Board lesson would be immensely beneficial.
Most importantly the students age and ability needs to be taken into consideration. As long as teachers focus on their students needs then integration will be successful and positive.

  8. When implementing technology it is important to assess the purpose of the technology in the lesson and how it will conduct meaning for the students.
Incorporating technology into a lesson will only be effective if there is a purpose for the technology, if it will enhance the content. For example using simulations to explain the concept of 'sink or float' would benefit a science lesson while allowing students to manipulate the interactive game to understand the concepts of bouyancy, volume, and mass.
Technology should not be used for a lesson simply to delieve the content it should have a set purpose and students should be able to make meaning from its incorporation in the curriculum.

  9. As everyone has stated so eloquently already, purposeful and meaningful implementation of technology is necessary for a teacher trying to use technology in teh classroom. The content must be appropriate if it is going to be used. The keyword is "enhance." We have to make sure that what we are presenting is enhancing the learning experience or we are just wasting time.

The second question is answered in the former paragraph. Effectiveness can be expected if and only if the content is on point and engaging as well as enhancing for the students. Showing mindless videos and bland powerpoints are not acceptable. We preach change and innovation, so we need to practice taht as well.

  10. When integrating technology into the classroom the main principle is whether or not it will integrate well with the discipline. The two should compliment each other. The technology should be meaningful and with a purpose. If the technology works well with the discipline and students are learning from it - other words, it works! then it is effective.
